About MIA

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants is a statutory body set up under The Accountants Act, 1967 to regulate and develop the accountancy profession in Malaysia. The functions of the Institute are, inter alia:

To regulate the practise of the accountancy profession in Malaysia
To promote in any manner it thinks fit, the interests of the accountancy profession in Malaysia;
To provide for the training and education by the Institute or any other body, of persons practising or intending to practise the profession;
To determine the qualifications of persons for admission as members; and
To approve, regulate and supervise the conduct of the Qualifying examination

Additional Info on MIA

MIA is a statutory body incorporated pursuant to the Accountants Act 1967 and has been entrusted the task of promoting and regulating the accountancy profession in Malaysia. The powers and functions of MIA are governed by the Accountants Act 1967. MIA regulates its members who are Chartered Accountants in
public practice, commerce and industry, the public sector and academia. A qualified person who wishes to hold himself or herself out as a Chartered Accountant or an accountant in Malaysia has to be registered with MIA.

MIA has over 17,350 members as at 30 April 2002, of whom, 26% are members in public practice. All company auditors in Malaysia, before obtaining the audit license from the Ministry of Finance, have to be registered with MIA as Chartered Accountants or Licensed Accountants and must have valid practicing certificates issued by MIA. Upon obtaining an audit license and registering an audit firm with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (formerly the Registry of Companies), the company auditor is required to register his or her firm with MIA. At present, there are about 1,200 audit firms registered with MIA.

MIA is responsible for promoting and regulating the accountancy profession in Malaysia. The Institute is actively involved in the development and issuance of approved auditing standards and also participate in the development of applicable approved accounting standards by the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board. Additionally, MIA is also actively participate in any legislative initiatives and developments spearheaded by the Securities Commission, the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and Bank Negara Malaysia relating to the regulation of the capital and financial markets and corporate governance, and by the Companies Commission of Malaysia relating to the regulation of companies pursuant to the Companies Act 1965.

The Institute is also active at the international level. As member bodies of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the Institute participates on various committees of IFAC including the Education Committee, the Compliance Committee and the Financial and Management Accounting Committee. The Institute has also participated on the International Auditing Practice Committee (now International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board) of IFAC. This participation has exposed the Institute to global best practices and requires the Institute to commit to establishing global standards for accountingeducation, ethics and professional conduct, accounting, and auditing, in Malaysia.
